The mission of Valor Girls is to equip and empower at-risk girls enabling them to pursue and attain their personal, social, educational, and professional goals. The overall goal of Valor Girls program is to enhance the personal and social skills of girls.
Valor Girls is seeking caring female adults as mentors to facilitate the program. Valor Girls mentors will provide twelve months of one-on-one mentoring to 35 - 40 girls ages 12-16 who are at risk or from low income families. Mentors will spend a minimum of four hours per month one-to-one with a mentee.
The application and Screening Process includes a: Written application, Driving record check, Criminal history check: state, child abuse and neglect, child abuse and neglect registry, sexual offender registry, personal interview, three personal references, and attend a two-hour mentor training.
Desirable qualities of mentors include the following: willing listener, encouraging and supportive, patient and flexible, and tolerant and respectful of individual differences. We want mentors who can: take the lead in supporting a young person through an ongoing relationship, serve as a positive role model and friend, build the relationship by planning and participating in activities together, strive for mutual respect and build self-esteem.
